30 Years of Coffee Culture
Thirty years is a long time to serve coffee.
It’s an even longer time to be part of people’s lives.
Coffee Culture opened its first coffee shop in Sumner in 1996. But from the beginning, the idea was about more than great coffee. Founder Chris Houston wanted to create a place at the heart of the community - somewhere people could meet, talk, laugh and feel welcome, whether they arrived in hi-vis, cycling shoes or a suit.
Thirty years later, that’s still what matters most.
A lot has changed
The early menu was a lot simpler. Great coffee, a few Coffee Cocktails, lemon meringue pie, carrot cake and bagels pretty much covered it.
Thirty years later, the menu has grown alongside the way we eat and drink. Alternative milks, iced drinks, matcha and coffee orders we probably couldn’t have imagined in 1996 are now all part of the mix.
Although, thankfully, the lemon meringue pie and carrot cake stuck around. Some things are hard to improve on.
30 years of life happening
Over three decades, we’ve had the privilege of watching a lot more than coffee being made.
We’ve watched kids go from fluffies to flat whites, and some from fluffies to working behind the counter and eventually managing stores.
We’ve had people tattoo our coffee cups on themselves.
We’ve seen Tinder dates become relationships, then marriages - with couples returning to Coffee Culture afterwards for wedding photos.
There have been study sessions that became careers, workouts followed by very well-earned cake, friendships, first dates, business meetings and countless “quick coffees” that somehow became two-hour catch-ups.
That’s what 30 Years Of… is really celebrating. Thirty years of moments.
Still here. Still local.
Thirty years has also brought earthquakes, COVID, changing trends, economic challenges and a hospitality industry that looks very different from the one we entered in 1996.
Through it all, we’ve kept evolving - while holding onto the things that make Coffee Culture, Coffee Culture.
That includes being part of our communities.
Through Local Heroes, Pink Ribbon, mental health fundraising, sponsorships, raffle donations and local initiatives, our stores have supported thousands of schools, sports teams, clubs, charities and community organisations over the years.
And we’re still one of those slightly unusual spots where you can come after dark. Coffee Culture has always believed there should be somewhere to meet, relax and catch up in the evening that doesn’t have to revolve around alcohol. Evening trading remains something that sets us apart.
So why are we still here?
We’ve changed. You’ve changed. Your order has probably changed too.
Thirty years later, the coffee still matters. But it’s never been the whole story.
It’s the people you meet for coffee. The conversations that happen over it. The regular order that doesn’t need explaining. The place you know you can always come back to.
When we look back, those are the things that make 30 years worth celebrating.
Because it was never just about the coffee. It was about everything that happened around it.
Chances are, somewhere in those 30 years, there’s a Coffee Culture story that belongs to you too.
Thanks for letting us be part of it.
